Our questions for the Mike “the Situation” Sorrentino is, why didn’t you just come out and say, “I have a problem with prescription opiate addiction?” Recently, the star of Jersey Shore fame disclosed that he had “voluntarily taken steps to get control of a prescription medication problem [he] had due to exhaustion.”
It would be nice to see someone who thinks of himself as such a macho guy to man-up and just say it like it is. Instead, like a lot of people, there is a tendency to try to downplay what is going on by saying it was from exhaustion, or that he was not in a pain pill addiction rehab but rather getting some much needed rest or other bogus excuse. There is no shame in admitting that one is seeking treatment for a disease, and it is time we start acting like that is true instead of trying to sweep it under the rug.
Especially in Hollywood, where drugs and alcohol are almost assumed to be part of the job description, you would think that someone would be able to own up to having a problem fully. It is almost like saying, “Yeah, I have a problem with prescription pill abuse, but it isn’t that bad. Not bad enough to have to be accountable for it, just bad enough to say to the entire world that it exists.” Come on, now. Give us a little more credit than that. If you are going to say it, say it loud and proud. While suffering from prescription opiate addiction isn’t something to put on the resume, its still nothing that one should be stigmatized and scorned over.
Then again, it is entirely possible it was just “a problem” and not full blown prescription pill addiction. There is some skepticism there, but it is entirely possible. There are plenty of people who do not need the services of an OC drug rehab, for instance, but when you do, then man-alive, sound off! If you do not need it, just keep quiet. You do not have to imply that it is somehow beneath you or make excuses about it. This is not the middle 20th century any more–people generally understand.
We sincerely hope that whatever the situation may be with The Situation (couldn’t avoid it, sorry), we hope he gets the help he needs. No one deserves to suffer the life of a drug addict or alcoholic. For those who survive the crucible however there are rewards and a new life unimaginable to those in the midst of that nightmarish existence. It would be a tragedy if someone had been put off to the idea of seeking drug and alcohol treatment because of negative connotations and missed out on that life and those opportunities. For those who are almost at the point where they can muster up the courage to take that step we would give 110% of our time and support. Instead, all too often, those people take the easy way out, trying to save face when face never needed saving, but lives did.
For the sake of clarity: we wish Mr. Sorrentino the best of luck in his new journey, regardless of what it consists of, and urge everyone to keep an open mind about things in general. The results can be pretty amazing!
