Most people know what the 12 step program is and how it works but they may not know what these three therapies are that are used for addiction recovery. We have mentioned recovery before but let’s look at the type of therapies used to help recovery.

Three therapies that are used

There are three therapies that can be employed but you may not know exactly what those therapies include or how they work. The biggest thing to know is that these therapies require an open mind and a willingness to learn ways to cope with life’s issues in a positive manner.

Cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT works by changing thinking and behavior toward difficulties in life. By psychoanalysis, the patient discusses with a therapist their behavior and thinking when difficulties in their life happen to learn why that behavior and thought pattern is destructive, as well as, ways to change it. How to better cope with those difficulties focusing on behavior and attitudes and how those relate to a better response to emotional problems.

Dialectal Behavioral Therapy

Dialectal behavioral therapy helps a person surmount undesirable, substance-abusing actions and harmful emotions.  Therapy sources help partakers create positive actions that erect a sturdy footing for recovery victory. It promotes a balance between change and acceptance that empowers the addict to take the steps toward a sober life. Through the therapy the patient learns the following:

  • How to discipline desires or longings
  • Cope with unhealthy feelings
  • Cultivate relapse prevention abilities
  • Establish positive and encouraging goals

This type of therapy breaks down goals into smaller and more manageable ones.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) suggests addictions are caused by the relationship of reasoning, behavior, and images. The addict thinks irrationally, has a self-defeating attitude, and imagines dysfunctionality. REBT treatment employs a complete approach that prepares the addict to intercede on these levels to address powerful cravings for nicotine, for example, effectively, without a cigarette.

Additional therapies

When combining these with medical and holistic treatments addicts are less likely to have a relapse than those who do not use these therapies.

Medical treatments include things like Methadone, Suboxone, and others which provide the addict help in discouraging substance and alcohol use.

Holistic treatments include things like diet, exercise, meditation, and massage. Diet, exercise, and massage can help the person feel physically better. Massage, like meditation, can ease stress and anxiety which could lead to negative behaviors causing a relapse.
